MGMA, Evalliance Sign Textile Partnership Deal
Release Date: February 9, 2016
Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA) and French NGO Evalliance have reached an agreement to implement a 2016-17 Action Plan to boost Myanmar’s textile-clothing sector.
The agreement has been concluded in the framework of a memorandum of understanding last year by the two organizations.
Jean-François Limantour, president of Evalliance, said, “The Myanmar garment sector has a huge potential for competitiveness as well as enormous possibilities to increase its exports to the European Union. No doubt that the democratic process in Myanmar paves the way for a successful, strong and friendly cooperation with the European textile-clothing industries and markets.”
The Action plan aims to increase the exports of garments from €400 million in 2015 to €1 billion in 2017, create employment in the sector, lessen Myanmar’s dependency on other countries for its textile needs and enhance profitability of factories.
Evalliance said it plans to open a permanent office in Yangon considering the increasing cooperation between Myanmar and the EU in the textile and clothing sector, in order to represent the association’s interests.
Thet Su Hlaing, managing director of Su Shwe Nadi Trading and Consulting and also official representative of Messe Frankfurt for Myanmar, has been appointed as Official Representative of Evalliance for Myanmar.
Paris-based Evalliance is a not-for-profit association which builds partnerships between the countries of the European Union and those of the Indochinese peninsula, in the sectors of textile, clothing, luxury goods, leather and footwear.
